A Writer’s Workshop
Writing the Literary Query Letter

GULFPORT, SEPTEMBER 2, 2003 – Small Adventures Bookshop
recently held a Writing Salon where authors and emerging writers
crafted literary query letters in a daylong workshop.
A
group of regional writers met in this boutique atmosphere to
discuss the problems and solutions encountered by published
and unpublished writers. With their own manuscripts and sample
drafts in hand, the group evaluated noted authors whose query
letters obtained the interest and subsequent publication of
their manuscripts. Query letters written by James Michener,
Nicholas Sparks, and other published authors provided direction
for the workshop project.
Hosted
by Jan Dutton, proprietor of the book shop, the event will be
repeated in September for the intermediate phase of the project.
Key points discussed included the style of the one-page query,
the strategy for "hooking" the interest of an agent
or book editor, the single-sentence capsule of the storyline,
and the documented audience statistics for each genre.
For
the second event, workshop participants plan to complete independent
research and return with a completed draft of a newly revised
literary query letter. The revised letters will be discussed
and critiqued in an open forum. Letters will target literary
agents appropriate to each writer's genre.
The
fee for the intermediate workshop is $29.00 and advance registration
is required. Registration includes: the cost of the workshop
and a copy of 16-page handout, The Ultimate Query Letter
Workbook, provided by Word Smitten e-book publishers, sponsors
of the event.
The
workshop will be September 20 at Small Adventures Bookshop,
3107 Beach Boulevard South, Gulfport, Florida, 33707. Call or
visit Jan Dutton, the Book Lady, by September 18, 2003. For
more details call (727) 347-8732.
